Umidigi Z2 smartphone review

Umidigi Z2 smartphone review

The Umidigi released a new smartphone, the Z2, a phone with a large notch display, a nice design, and great specifications for the price.

We can find on the internet a comparison made between this Z2 and the competitor Huawei P20

The Umidigi Z2 is the first smartphone with a 6.2-inch Full HD elite display with a 90% screen to body ratio and a resolution of 2246 x 1080.

The phone has amazing viewing angles as you will have no problem reading the screen when outside.

Bringing you the Android Oreo experience, Umidigi is one of the few Android phones that offer you this experience without the bloatware.

Design and display

The Z2 has a rounded design with a gradient color that appears to be metallic on the back. This gradient color effect is available in the variants Twilight, which is a color gradation from violet to green and Phantom, which is a darker, black design.

The transitions between the case sections are cleanly done and all of them are rounded, there are no edges or corners.

This makes the Umidigi smartphone very comfortable to hold in the hand.

Its weight is just 165 g, and it is one of the lightest devices in comparison with other competitors; the dimensions of the display are also moderate compared to the competitors, which can be traced back to the very small bezel around the display.

The phone has a 6.2” display and a nearly 19:9 aspect ratio with a 2246 x 1080 resolution.

The notch turns out to be pretty nice and sharp; the glass back makes the phone a little bit slippery, but the metal trim saves it.

The screen-to-body ratio of 90-percent gave a great user experience.

The screen is bright enough to be used well under almost direct sunlight and color accuracy seems to be very good

Hardware and software

The Umidigi Z2 offers solid mid-range equipment. It brings an Helio P23-MT6763VS from Mediatek and an ARM’s Mali G71-MP2 graphics unit. It has 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 256 GB with a microSD card.

However, if you want to expand the memory, the dual-SIM function will not be available; so you have to choose between a dual SIM device or extended memory. For charging and data transfer, you have a Type-C USB connection.

The Umidigi Z 2 runs the Android Oreo version 8.1.

If several users need to access the Android smartphone, you can set up different accounts in the Settings menu.

Other features

One of the most important features is the fingerprint scanner which works fine but there is a significant delay between unlocking and the time the display lights up.

The loudspeaker sound quality is not the best but it’s quite good.

The face unlock also works surprisingly well.

A disappointing thing is that the phone doesn’t have a LED notification light and a headset jack.

Umidigi Z2 supports up to 7 network modes and also supports 4G LTE in both slots simultaneously, to enjoy faster data transmission, lower consumption, and more stable connection.

Even though it has good hardware, gaming performance is not the best. You can play most of the 3D games on reduced graphics but you should expect to see some lags and the phone gets hot quickly enough.

Battery life on this phone could be better with its huge capacity power bank. You should expect to last up to 7 hours of screen-on time.

The Umidigi Z2’s PE+ technology maximizes charging efficiency by allowing it to reach a 9V/2A output. It helps the device to fully charge within 80 minutes.

Camera

The Z2 is equipped with a 16MP + 8 MP main dual-camera system with an f/1.7 aperture and a 16 MP +8 MP front camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

This allows you to take magnificent selfie pictures with clearly delimited colors and objects, even in weaker light conditions.

While the main camera of the Umidigi Z2 takes good snapshots, it reproduces shady image areas that are slightly too dark. In panorama pictures, the colors are too pale and objects do not appear separated from each other. The details are recognizable, but they become blurry with increasing distance.

In the close-up range, the camera of the Android smartphone can take detailed pictures with well-saturated colors.

The shady areas also turn out too dark here, causing the details to be lost; but on the other hand, bright areas are sharp and well-delineated, as long as they are within the focal range.

The camera app offers some color filters, a panorama, and a bokeh mode. Separate settings such as white balance, ISO values, and exposure cannot be adjusted.

The video function allows you to take recordings with similarly exceptional quality as the pictures.

An image stabilizer prevents too much blurriness.

On the overall image, some noise is visible, but it is well defined for a budget camera; the Z2 does a better job than some other more expensive devices when light is at a premium. Colors are also accurate.

The HDR mode is not the best, brightening the photo a little too much, making them look washed-out.

Conclusions

The performance is excellent for the price point, but the camera quality could be better. Some areas could be improved, but considering the price, we are getting more than what we are paying for.

The manufacturer also adds a pre-installed screen protector and a case to better protect the device.

The Umidigi Z2 is a phone that looks nice, it has a sharp display and the device is fast for the daily tasks.

Also, the phone has some minuses like the absence of an LED notification light or a headphone jack.

It is not the best device you can find, but the price you have to pay for it is more than you can expect. You can buy it from Aliexpress or Gearbest at a good price.
